Making a garden from scratch

 Design & Build

If you want a completely new garden, we can help design plan, construct and give advice on how to look after it.
Normally this will follow a specific process to secure a successful outcome.

1. Consultation & brief

We come to your home to discuss your project and see the space. We are also happy to do a Zoom call if this is more convenient. It's important for us to understand what you like and dislike, what you want the garden to achieve and the budget you have in mind. From this meeting we will develop a proposal with requirements and approximate timelines.

2. Survey & analysis

Once the proposal has been agreed, a site survey needs to be undertaken. Buildings, existing plants and trees that need to stay are recorded and photographed, together with level changes, directions, soil types etc. For very large or complex sites a professional surveyor will need to be commissioned.

From the survey a detailed analysis will be developed, which will inform the designs.

3. Concept design

Once all the relevant information has been recorded, we will prepare a presentation for discussion. This will include a draft plan, showing the location of pathways and terraces, lawns, planting beds, or items such as pergolas or water features. This plan may be complemented with relevant mood boards, 3D drawings, samples etc.

4. Developed designs & planting plan

Once the presentation plan and concepts have been approved, the final design can be drawn-up, incorporating any changes from the previous meeting. A package of drawings will be supplied, containing everything that is needed for the scheme to be accurately costed and built.

At this stage, we can help find a reputable landscape company to cost the garden and book in the work, or you can work with a company of your choice.

Planting plan

The planting plan is an overview of which plants go where in your garden, taking into account location and aspect of the planting beds, the type of soil, as well as your preference in colour, texture, and seasonality. The planting plan also indicates the sizes and sub-species of the plants needed.

5. Sourcing

Working with our large network of suppliers ensuring all plants are of a high quality and healthy, we will then source all the plants, wood, stones, pergolas etc. to create the perfect garden and have everything delivered on site.

6. Construction & planting

During the construction phase we will help oversee the build and monitor progress. Once the garden is finished, we will produce a report detailing how the garden should be maintained in years going forward.
